Kevin Bright, Jessica Parks, and Jesse Foote have just completed a two-day hands-on training on Energy Modeling. This course, held at the Green Roundtable’s Nexus center in Boston, taught a step-by-step procedure for completing building simulation analyses using the eQUEST modeling software. The three Green Building Services (GBS) staffers can now use eQUEST to create building envelopes, define occupancy schedules and weather conditions, set values for power consumption and mechanical equipment, and generate modeling reports estimating building performance. This allows for the comparison of a design building with a code-compliant base case, and enables the easy comparison of different design options being considered by the team as part of the life cycle costing process.  Finally, the documentation required for the LEED credit “Optimize Energy Performance” was reviewed.

The skills learned in this course will improve the services offered by GBS in a number of ways, including: enhanced reviews of energy models produced by project engineers, analysis of energy conservation measures within new or existing buildings, and potentially providing full energy modeling services in the future.

“This was a great course, taught at just the right level,” said GBS manager Jesse Foote. “Ravi Srinivasan, the instructor, didn’t assume that we already knew how to use the software, but he also didn’t waste much time reviewing basic building concepts, which allowed us to make a lot of progress in just two days.”

“Counterclockwise, Counterclockwise, Counterclockwise. ” repeated GBS coordinator Jessica Parks, referring to the direction required when defining HVAC zones (note that this caused her model to crash at least twice.)

GBS coordinator Kevin Bright summed it up nicely: “I’m ready. Let’s start an energy modeling service tomorrow.”
