My mother raised me with a "do not waste" mentality. She had grown up in a large family in India and resources were limited. I always felt bad about wasting anything, so when I received an Earth Day magazine about recycling as an 8 year-old, I was hooked.
This was a way to keep from wasting! Of course, the idea to consume only what you need and reuse what you can was even more important, but this meant that even less trash would be filling our earth. I have been excited about saving the earth since then.
I would have to say that my favorite project has been the Zero-Waste events we have pulled off over the past year. I feel like these events not only prevented gallons of waste from going to the landfill, but they also promoted more awareness about composting, recycling, and waste reduction.
One of the most important things we would like to do is begin composting all kitchen and catering waste at the School. There is so much waste that comes from the many wonderful events at the Kennedy School, and we would like to put that waste to positive use.
- Consume less.
- Offset my electricity use by contributing to the New England Wind Fund.
- Promote environmental awareness wherever I can.
