Sustainability at Harvard

This is the season to be generous

As the trees are standing leafless and the temperatures are (finally!) dropping it's time to bring out our winter sweaters and wool socks. And, per habit, every time our closets change their duds we often discover long forgotten items that we'll doubtfully wear this winter, especially since that bulky christmas sweater saw no cheer last season. It's time to let go of those items and hand them over to those who could really use another warm layer this winter.

Two donation bins have been in place at the MAC and Hemenway gyms for the past week and a half, collecting old workout clothes, jackets, and sweatshirts, athletic shoes, and workout equipment to ensure that they don't end up in landfills and find a good home instead. Thanks to everyone who lightened their wardrobes and donated items to neighbors who can put them to good use this winter. Living sustainably is not only something done at a personal level by recycling and conserving goods, but also by reusing items. Donating items to individuals who will put them to good use not only eases our consciences by clearing our closets, but begins a rippling effect of reduced consumption, starting with us and carrying on to numerous others.

We'd also like to thank all who made this new collection process (which we hope to do twice a year!) possible: Rob Gogan & his crew at Harvard Recycling, Wendy Healy and Christina Hoff at Harvard Athletics, and Matt Stec & his crew at CGIS.
