Earth Week at Harvard
First celebrated in 1970, this year marks the 39th anniversary of Earth Day. At Harvard, we officially celebrate for a week, starting April 20th. There are always many events, but this year is shaping up to be the most happening Earth Week yet! Films, lectures, thought-provoking displays, cooking contests... We've got them all covered this year. Please join us for the fun and festivities!
Earth Day/Week activities
All week long: April 21st-25th:
- Green Week in the Hark: focus on food sustainability/using reusable containers (HLS)
April 20th:
- Tar Creek Documentary showing & faculty research discussion (HSPH),
Sponsored by HSPH Environmental Healthy Club, location TBD, 5:30-8pm - “Eat Green, Save Green” Workshop in the Monks Library, HUHS, Holyoke Center (HU Health Services)
April 21st:
- Sustainability Lunch Lecture, co-sponsored by HMS, OFS, and Students for Environmental Awareness in Medicine (HMS), TMEC #227, 12:30-1:30pm.
Lunch provided. - CFL Swap-Out (HSPH), exchange incandescent bulbs for CFLs or bring old CFLs to recycle! Sebastian’s Cafeteria, 10am-noon.
- FLOW documentary showing, investigating the world water crisis. Location: Kresge G2. 12:30-2:30pm.
- SEAS Earth Day Potluck and Community Mug Collection, Maxwell Dworkin lobby cafe - 33 Oxford Street 12 noon. Sustainability Quiz with prizes.
April 22nd:
- Mt. Trashmore (HBS) Spangler Lawn
- Top 10 Displays: open air & TV screens (HBS) all day

- Volunteers manning recycling & printing stations (HBS)
- HUDS is hosting an Earth Day Dinner in all the undergrad dining halls plus Cronkhite and Dudley
- University Operations Services will sponsor a “stuff swap” event on Earth Day. Employees will be encouraged to go through their homes, identify unwanted items like clothing, cds, or books, and trade them at the swap
- Volunteers manning recycling (HLS)
- Reusable Mug Promotion (HMS), a collaboration among HMS, Restaurant Associates, and OFS (bring in a reusable mug -or buy one of the HMS/OFS Earth Day mugs!- and get a free cup of coffee).
- Sustainability Showcase (HMS), in Elements cafeteria, 11am-2pm
- Sustainability Showcase (HSPH), in Sebastian’s cafeteria, 11am-2pm
- Bike to Work Promotion (HSPH) (show a bike helmet and receive a free cup of
coffee from Sebastian’s café). Sebastian’s Café, all day. - Take the Stairs Competition kicks off (HSPH). Lasts April 22nd – May 22nd.
- Recycling Quiz & Waste Walk in front of the Science Center (FAS)
- Earth Day Service sponsored by ECOdiv (DIV), noon
- Earth Day tabling at Conroy Commons (HGSE), most likely 12-2pm
- Screening Story of Stuff (HGSE), Conroy Commons, most likely 12-2pm
- Earth Day tabling at the Forum (HKS), most likely 12-2pm

April 23rd:

April 24th:
- Organic v. conventional taste test (HBS) Not confirmed yet
- Iron Chef, Quincy House (HUDS) Cancelled
- EcoOpportunity Panel (HSPH). Lunch provided. Location: FXB-G13. 12:30-1:30pm
- Ministry & Earth Community Conference (DIV), 8am-5pm
- Earth Day Quorum Call (student social event), HKS, Town Hall or outside, 4-6pm
April 25th:
- Earth Day celebration, MAC Quad (Harvard-bike)
- Model Dorm Room display (FAS)
- Green Tour of Harvard Yard (FAS)Green Cup Winner Announced (FAS)
- Bottled Water Taste Test & Recycling Test (FAS)
- Charles River clean up (UOS group) 9am-12pm, N. side of river between Western/Memorial and Peabody Terrace.
- UOS will provide composting and recycling support for the Resource Efficiency Program and Environmental Action Committee Earth Day Event at the Malkin Athletic Facility. UOS will also provide information on our Organic Landscaping program during University tours associated with the Malkin event.
- UOS employees will participate in the Charles River Cleanup
